“So stupefying” was how Carl Bernstein, the Watergate reporter who worked with Bob Woodward on the most famous story in newspaper history, described one of the headlines of a post I read Thursday night:
“Mubarak: ‘All Muslims Must Follow One Believer, Only One God’ ”
The post was about former Trump adviser Omarosa Manigault Newman’s appearance on MSNBC. The series of tweets and Facebook Live videos Manigault Newman, who is African-American, tweeted last Wednesday was in response to her firing from the Trump administration. It was the first sign that something really terrible was going on. But what I thought was interesting in that MSNBC segment was this statement Manigault Newman made: “Muslims have to become Muslim, they have to become one faith. That’s not American. That’s not who we are.”
Bernstein says he immediately thought that Manigault Newman was making a statement on an unspecified issue with which she was passionately passionate. And at first, Bernstein thought he heard a fake. So he tweeted about it.
Bernstein retweeted MSNBC reporter Michelle Bernard, who noted the other night that she had met with Manigault Newman and that her comments sounded “off, manipulative and ignorant.”
Bernstein says he hasn’t talked to Manigault Newman since that conversation.
That’s a development. It was the one nice thing about this story. Here is that story. It is jaw-dropping.
One quick thought: From what I’ve read, Manigault Newman seems genuinely sincere in calling for a conversion of Muslims to one religion. I don’t know her. But she certainly seems to have so many of her own complicated and harsh sentiments, and she’s always zipping between the reality TV shows where she once popped up, and the sort of reality TV shows where she’s now a citizen of the United States.
There’s no way to doubt that she has a herniated worldview. But when we ought to care about something like this, which might matter to people, some things just simply need to be left alone. In fact, President Donald Trump tweeted out a message of support yesterday: “Omarosa, get on with your life and get out of the way. Do not Touch Gold Star Families.”
It is not a simple one.
